Jake & Payton's Surprise Proposal at Upham Beach | St. Pete Beach Proposal Photographer

Some proposals are a sweet question on a quiet beach. Jake and Payton's was that — plus a second surprise hiding a little ways down the sand, waiting for the perfect moment to come running.

When Jake reached out, he had one goal: Payton could have absolutely no idea. Not the day, not the spot, not the photographer waiting at a distance with a long lens. And because Payton is originally from Oregon, Jake wanted to give her something even bigger than the ring. He flew her family in to be there for it — and they pulled it off without a single hint slipping.

Setting the Scene on St. Pete Beach

We picked Upham Beach in St. Pete Beach for a reason. It is one of my favorite spots on the Gulf Coast for a proposal, and once you see the photos you will understand why. Soft white sand, that gorgeous green water, and a built-in backdrop most people walk right past.

Before Payton ever arrived, I met up with her parents and Jake's mom to get everything set just right. Together we built a simple but absolutely perfect arch of pink and white roses pressed into the sand — the kind of detail that looks effortless and means everything. The finishing touch was a bottle of Argyle sparkling wine, brought in straight from Oregon, a quiet little nod to home tucked right into the center of the arch.

The First Surprise: "Want to Go for a Walk?"

The plan was beautifully ordinary on the surface. Jake and Payton would head out for a casual walk on the beach. I was already in position a good distance away, ready and waiting, so there was nothing for Payton to notice.

As they came up on the roses, Jake dropped to one knee — and the look on her face says the rest. Total, hand-over-mouth, completely caught-off-guard surprise. Exactly what he wanted. She said yes, and the beach got a whole lot brighter.

The Second Surprise: Family All the Way From Oregon

Here is where Jake outdid himself. While the proposal was happening, both moms had walked far down the beach — close enough to watch the whole thing unfold, far enough to stay completely hidden.

Once the ring was on Payton's hand, they came down to surprise her in person. Watching Payton realize her family had flown across the country to be there, on this exact day, was its own moment entirely. There were happy tears, a lot of hugging, and a champagne pour to celebrate the newly engaged couple.

Why I Love Upham Beach for Proposals

If you are dreaming about a beach proposal near Tampa, Upham Beach belongs at the top of your list. Beyond the classic Gulf views, it has that incredible rock breakwall that adds texture and drama to portraits — perfect for those just-engaged photos right after the question. And the Secret Garden is right there too, with palms, tropical greenery, and pops of color that give you a completely different look just steps from the sand.

One location, multiple backdrops, and that golden Gulf light. It is hard to beat.

Thinking About Your Own Surprise Proposal?

Planning a surprise proposal can feel like a lot — coordinating the spot, the timing, the people, and keeping it all secret. That is exactly the part I love helping with. I work with couples (and sneaky family members) all over Tampa Bay, St. Pete, Clearwater, and the Gulf beaches to make the moment feel natural, look beautiful, and stay a complete surprise until the very last second.
